Description
An indian war horse is splashing in the water.
An Indian war horse was often painted in preparation for battle. The long zig-zag lines symbolize lightning to add power and speed to the mustang horse.
Power and Magic: It was believed that the application of certain symbols and colors afforded the wearer with 'Magic' for power and protection by drawing on natural powers and combining these with the power of the warrior and his horse. Symbols included stripes, circles and triangles.
The generalised, and the most common meaning, of the Hand symbol represented success in hand to hand combat.
The horse was introduced to the North American continent in the 1500 - 1600's. To the Native American Indians, who lived the life of a Stone Age man, the horse and its use by men, was a wonder to behold. It was at first referred to by the Native American Indians as the “Big Dog” or “God Dog”. The horse and rider team were seen as a godlike being. To retain this illusion for some years it was made illegal for a Native Indian to ride or own a horse.
